Modern Concrete Technology Requires State Of The Art Additives And Tools
• Green Cement - Concrete Using No Portland Cement?
One of the big complaints about using concrete to build anything green is the fact that it takes a lot of energy to produce the portland cement used in making portland cement.
I would argue concrete is far superior to using the last remaining trees on the planet to put up flimsy structures for bugs to eat and storms to blow away. However the enormous amounts of energy consumed in the making of portland cement is still a valid point.

What if there was an alternative way to make cement using vast amounts of waste materials and no portland cement?
What if this process would also reduce the cost of producing concrete by half or more?
I am talking with Richard Basaraba owner of:
GreenConcreteUSA.com http://www.greenconcreteus.com/

Richard has worked in the cement industry for many years and has a patent on turning flyash into a superior substitute for standard portland cement. Richard is in the process of putting up a website and starting to market his green cement. I will link to it as soon as it is up and running.
You can talk with Richard at 404.309.0851 or email him at richardbasaraba@yahoo.com

The big hurdle I see here will be overcoming the current legitimate hysteria about all the flyash blowing and flowing into the environment from dumps all over the world where power companies have been dumping the stuff.
My call is once you encase the flyash in a concrete structure the danger is nil.
Flyash is already used to produce concrete and has proven a valuable and cost saving ingredient in standard portland based mixes.
Richard has taken concrete technology to a whole new level.

• Reinforcing Fiber For Concrete - Essential ingredient (to me) in almost any concrete mix
There are many different types of fibers sold to reinforce concrete. Here are three I have had experience with.
Natural Basalt Fiber
http://www.basaltfm.com/eng/fiber/application.html  Completely natural and stronger than steel.

HELIX stainless steel fibers are the most interesting addition to concrete I have seen. Putting HELIX fiber in concrete almost eliminates rebar. No joke. - See:  http://www.helixfiber.com/index.html

Nycom 800-456-9266 http://www.nycon.com/  Kuraray RECS15fiber-8 fibers are supposed to be unique in that they bind with the concrete.

• Concrete Additives - Modern concrete is likely to contain additives designed to enhance performance and workability
I just found Enhance ICD Inc.
(403) 998-5505 (Cell Canada), (702) 715-4027 (Cell USA)   http://www.enhance-solutions.com
Enhance ICD makes several interesting products to enhance concrete and mortar performance.
I am most interested in their cement hydration catalyst (PMT). Sounds like it is performs miracles in concrete.
Here is some technical stuff on PMT: http://ferrocement.net/flist/index.php?topic=169.65;wap2

• Ceramic Concrete Board - Magnesium Oxide Board or MgO Board
This product replaces drywall, wall sheathing, roof sheathing, floor decking, etc. MgO board is also used for poured in place concrete forms. The MgO board is left in place after the temporary supports are stripped. The MgO board can then be finished. Water proof, mold proof, fire proof, insect proof. WOW!
Magnesiacore.com MgO Board http://magnesiacore.com/ 905-794-1333 - sells MgO board. I was quoted about sixty five cents a square foot for 12mm x 4' x 8' sheets delivered to Oklahoma City.

Jonathon Hampton with the Ceramic Research Institute comes highly recommended 479-899-7053.
Check out this Wikipedia article on MgO wallboard:  http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium_oxide_wallboard

NCI Panel Systems http://www.ncisteel.com 845-565-1000 makes modular panels using MgO board. They ship the panels - you assemble them and pour them full of cellular concrete. Wa La you have a building. Veddy interesting.

• Cementitious Foam Insulation - Can be used in a variety of different ways
Along with changing the way we build new structures we need to address upgrading the existing buildings to bring them up to new energy standards. Here is a product that can be used in new construction and retrofitting older buildings.
Check out AirKrete    http://www.airkrete.com/   315-237-2104
Cellular concrete is not just used in new construction pouring walls, floors and roofs.
Blow concrete in a wall for insulation? Certainly wouldn't burn. Bugs won't like it. Could not get much greener.

• Tools For Working With Lightweight Concrete - Specialized building materials call for specialized tools. I LOVE tools.

AAC Tools  http://www.taylortradingco.com/  has a lot of interesting information and cool looking tools related to AAC and Cast In Place Cellular Concrete.

For Cast In Place Cellular Concrete equipment and supplies check out:

The Arbortech AS 170 saw http://arbortechusa.com/view/allsaw-information/  is designed for brick and masonry work but is said to work great on cellular concrete.

Most Important Tool For Making My Favorite Form Of Lightwieght Concrete - EPSCrete
I recently was contacted by:
EnStyro 563-542-7255 http://www.enstyro.com/
I see great potential in EnStyro's business pla
n. They are making equipment to harvest the vast amount of scrap polystyrene (EPS) currently being thrown away and putting it to good use.
Using EnStyro's foam shredding equipment: http://www.enstyro.com/mobile-recycling-equipment/  produces aggregate from local EPS waste suitable for making EPSCrete to form and pour walls on site. All from locally acquired materials that would otherwise wind up in the dump. Another great plus is that this would save on shipping any kind of block around the country. Use the Green Cement to make the StyroCrete and you are using almost 100% local recycled material to pour bomb proof walls, floors, you name it.
I may be in love.

I want to build some buildings like these!!!

I traveled to Watts Oklahoma to visit Eugene Sargent Creations  http://www.eugenesargent.com/
Eugene and Jesse Thomas with Ziacrete  http://blog.onevillage.tv/?p=380  479-445-8593  ziacrete@mac.com.
Eugene and Jesse are experimenting with cast in place and formed block cellular concrete on Eugene's very impressive new art studio built with CIPCC.
Eugene is also into using ferrocement. Check out the FC bench on his website.

I am continuing to research. I will keep this page updated.
